Hike: Foroglio - Bignasco through the wild Bavona Valley

8.3 km I 2h 19 I ↗ 222 m ↘ 471 m I Family hike through the wild Bavona valley

The journey by bus and postal bus from Cevio, Centro, takes only 23 minutes, including a change in Bignasco. In Foroglio, the hiking trail leads directly to the foot of the impressive waterfall, where you can cool off in the spray and humid microclimate in summer.

Afterwards, Ristorante La Froda in Foroglio invites you to enjoy a traditional Ticino meal or a refreshing aperitif in the garden. A beautiful spot with a fantastic view of the waterfall and the Bavona Valley.

The trail initially leads gently up and down the left side of the valley through sparse chestnut forests. Along the way, you pass several Splüi (under-rock structures), built as shelters and stables beneath the rocks and still very well preserved today. Even today, these sometimes quite large under-rock structures provide shelter during rain and thunderstorms.

In Fontana, the hiking trail is interrupted for approximately one kilometer due to the devastating storm and resulting landslide in spring 2024. The hike continues temporarily along the valley road to Mulítt . From here, the trail continues along the right bank of the Bavona to Bignasco , where the Bavona joins the Maggia .

Special features:

  • Fantastic waterfall of Foroglio right at the beginning of the hike

  • Well-preserved Splüi (under-rock structures) which were formerly used as goat stables for transhumance: La Val Bavona... e la transumanza

  • The hike is worthwhile even in wet weather: when it rains after dry periods, you can encounter countless fire salamanders directly on the hiking trail.
