Discover Cà Lüina from the inside - a modern rustico as a holiday flat in the Maggia Valley

The three-hundred-year-old house has been extensively restored with the aim of preserving its character.

Today, up to eight people can enjoy their holidays at Cà Lüina Ferien. Two bedrooms with double beds and an attic room with four beds, which is ideally used as a family room, offer the necessary space. On hot summer days, the house stays pleasantly cool if the windows are left closed during the day. On cooler days in spring and autumn, the living rooms can be heated with two pellet stoves. The new open kitchen is modernly equipped and, together with the large dining table, forms the center of the house.

During the renovation, special emphasis was placed on the use of natural materials from the region.

Together with local craftsmen, the rooms were made habitable again where necessary using local larch, gneiss from the immediate vicinity and mineral lime plaster.

Worauf musste beim Umbau des Cà Lüina besonders geachtet werden?

A key element in the renovation of the rustico was the use of natural, raw, and historic building materials. Mineral building materials and wood were consistently chosen, and plastics and plastic foams were deliberately avoided. The permeable walls have been preserved to prevent moisture damage from modern use.

Durable, modern building materials such as high-density fiberboard, ceramics, glass, wrought iron, and wood were chosen for the modern interior. Materials that age beautifully and will retain their high-quality appearance even after several decades. For restoration work, such as replacing damaged doors and paneling, old boards from the house were used wherever possible and joined using historical construction techniques and used, hand-forged nails. The use of high-quality components and building materials ensured a valuable renovation while preserving the original character.

Is the Cà Lüina a listed building?

The protection status of the hamlet of Boschetto is documented as follows:

  • Federal Inventory ISOS: Since 2007, the town centre of Boschetto has been part of the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites (ISOS).

  • Cantonal structure plan: It is listed in the cantonal structure plan as a settlement of national value.

  • Municipal level: Boschetto is also protected at the municipal level.

The protected status underscores the great cultural and historical value of the landscape and the village of Boschetto. The "Paesaggio Boschetto" project, organized by APAV and the municipality of Cevio, aims to highlight and preserve the most important elements of this valuable landscape. During the renovation, the exterior appearance, in particular, had to be preserved unchanged, although the balcony could be renewed and modern windows installed to ensure modern use.

How can I recognize the craftsmanship of the builders and craftsmen of Cà Lüina?

The craftsmanship is clearly evident in the detailed natural stone walls. Some of the walls were built dry – without mortar. Also characteristic are the carefully covered natural stone roofs with the underlying wooden structure, typically with a supporting framework without a ridge beam. Many of the houses in the Maggia Valley are equipped with balconies or verandas made of wood or stone, which not only extend the living space but also offer a place to relax with a view of the valley or the surrounding mountains. At Cà Lüina, these historically unique elements have been excellently preserved for the future. The modern elements such as the kitchen, bathroom, and windows were manufactured using modern tools and contemporary craftsmanship. All of this is done with high-quality, simple, and natural materials. The historically preserved components were worked by hand, for example, the surfaces of the hand-split gneiss slabs or the chestnut and larch beams, which were worked by hand with an axe.

The craftsmanship is also evident in modern components such as the windows and doors. Old joining methods such as rabbet strips are naturally used to join the new doors. Old forged hinges, fittings, and nails have also been given a second life in many places.
